CRIMSON SKIES
3. Amaranthe
Distant Kingdom
The Kingdom of Amaranthe, millennia ago known as the United Kingdom, is a land of legend and magic. Much like Insomnia with the Insomniacs, Amaranthines have their own legend – long ago, the first King of Amaranthe, was blessed by fairies. With this power, not only did he fight off incoming invaders, but brought magic to the country. Thus began the most prosperous centuries of Amaranthe; the royal family ruled kindly while most citizens were blessed with the ability to wield this power in a variety of ways; some use incantations, an old family spellbook, or ingredients such as gemstones and crystals harvested from Amaranthe’s territory Lotus (formerly Republic of Ireland). Nymphs and fairies also coexist with the lush nature of this small country, and most Amaranthines have some sort of mixed blood.
Amaranthines tend to see their magic and communication to the unseen world as dependent on the royal line. Perhaps it is because the royal family have very distinct purple eyes, though very few commoners ever actually see them in person. Though all the portraits of the royal family were destroyed in a tragedy known to the public as The Siege, those who still remember Amaranthe history well will recall that most regents tend to go blind early in life.
Unfortunately, the Kingdom went through a dark period almost four decades back. When King Alvin married a commoner from a faraway land of Insomnia, the magic started to wane. Though the Kingdom of Amaranthe is no stranger to mixed blood, having many citizens dance among incarnations of nature, some began to blame the commoner Queen. When she had a son – Arthur – who bore the same eyes as the legends, the worries eased amongst the populace. But only a few years after being born, The Siege occurred – where an underground assassin group calling themselves Evening’s Glory murdered the King and Queen and destroyed many precious relics… but fortunately Prince Arthur lived to see the day.
Because Evening’s Glory was dismantled by the efforts of a loyal royal guard and, as the public knows it, Prince Arthur reappeared after a short time in hiding, there was no large unrest in the country after The Siege. After the event, Prince Arthur assumed the throne, married, and died young. His son, Artemis, has recently been coronated. Artemis is exceptional at witchcraft and the Amaranthine people already call the young regent “The Magician King.”
Amaranthe has had neutral relations with Silver, especially after King Alvin married someone from Insomnia. As it has a very small diplomatic presence in Platina, Amaranthe has always maintained the status quo that Insomnia is a rightful territory of Silver. Historically, Amaranthe had sent one or two of its citizens to Thule to learn about alchemy on an annual exchange basis, due to the similarities between spellcraft. With increased pressure from the Silver government to take sides and formally demarche Insomnia’s action, in an effort to appease Silver while maintaining neutrality, a few years back Amaranthe and Silver arranged for Lotus and Thule to known as “sister cities”. As such, many Amaranthine people have warm feelings towards Silver.
Amaranthe has not yet issued any statements about its perspective on the war.
